Nissan Juke-R: Supersized Performance in a Compact Crossover

While today's Nissan Juke is certainly no slouch in the driving department—squeezing 188 horses out of its turbocharged 1.8-liter I4 engine—the automaker has, unsurprisingly, begun exploring a higher-performance model aimed directly at enthusiasts. What's more of a surprise is how the company is achieving this: Swapping out said engine for the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 that's usually found making 530 hp in Nissan's flagship sportscar, the GT-R. The result will be a radical mashup known as the Juke-R—a street-legal concept being put together for Nissan by the internationally known motorsports team at RML.

In addition to the GT-R's engine, the Juke-R will also leverage Godzilla's six-speed transaxle and a modified version of its AWD driveline and prop shaft, as well as:

  • A full aero body kit, with flared wheel arches, revised front and rear bumpers, and a unique split rear wing
  • Twin racing-style seats with five-point harnesses
  • A visible roll cage that meets FIA safety standards
  • A dashboard that integrates the GT-R's gauges and seven-inch customizable LCD display
  • 20-inch forged alloy rims from RAYS

"Juke lends itself perfectly to a sports derivative and Juke-R explores that territory," said Paul Willcox, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing for Nissan in Europe. "Equally at home on road and track, Juke-R showcases two of the most exciting cars in our range and highlights the technical innovation that drives Nissan. This car will more than live up to the dynamic driving experience we engineer into all our cars."

And while Nissan has no plans for the Juke-R to enter production—yet—you can't call it a "one-off": After all, the automaker is creating two Juke-R's, one with left-hand drive and one configured with right-hand drive.
