Renault-Nissan Has Spent $5.6 Billion On EVs

Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has said his conglomerate has already invested more than .6 billion into electric vehicle technology. He also said that the staggering sum is just the beginning.

“We have already invested euro 4 billion, and we will be above that as we have development still to do,” said Ghosn to Dow Jones Newswires.

Ghosn has repeatedly said that Renault-Nissan will become the global leader in the burgeoning electric vehicle segment. The companies predict that EVs will account for 10 percent of global auto sales by the year 2020, and they hope to become the EV brand of choice for those seeking zero-emission vehicles.

Already, Renault-Nissan’s investment in EVs surpasses many others in the space. U.S. billionaire Warren Buffet's investment of 0 million for 10 percent of Chinese battery firm and automaker BYD appears trivial by comparison. However, General Motors secured a billion line of credit last year in order to support the development for three new advanced electrified vehicles like the Chevy Volt. With the Leaf outselling the Volt by huge margins, perhaps the Alliance's investment is beginning to pay off.
