Nissan GT3-Spec Nismo GT-R Makes Racing Debut

Nissan already uses the GT-R to compete in Japan’s own Super GT series and in the FIA GT1 World Championship, to name a few. But models used in those series only resemble the road-going GT-R model and aren't even powered by Godzilla's turbocharged six-cylinder engine.

However, the all-new GT3 version of the car is much closer to the road car. Instead of being powered by a V8, it's powered by the same turbocharged V6 engine (albeit with a little fine-tuning) as the standard GT-R. The racer made its debut at the Magny-Cours circuit in France over the weekend where it finished eighth out of 35 entries.

“The car ran like clockwork," said driver Richard Westbrook. "I had to keep reminding myself that this was its first race! It’s excellent on tyres, so it means you can lap at the same speed at the end of a stint as you can at the start. For a brand new car to run the whole of the three-hours without a problem is a great achievement. It’s easy but rewarding to drive and I must admit that, even after completing two one-hour stints, I didn’t want to get out of it.”

The Nissan NISMO GT-R GT3 concept started life over a year ago. It was developed by Nissan's racing division with help from the JR Motorsports team.

“Once I was out of the traffic I was able to put in some really solid laps," added driver David Brabham. "The car is easy to drive which means it doesn’t take long to dial yourself into a good rhythm. To finish where we did is a great debut for a brand new car and a tribute to Nissan, NISMO and JRM.”
