Nissan Unveils Leaf-To-Home Power Supply System

2011 Nissan Leaf image

Nissan has unveiled a new system that enables the Leaf EV to supply a house with electricity for up two days. While the average household in Japan consumes just 10 to 12 kilowatt hours of electricity a day, the system would provide a power for a slightly different duration should it arrive in the U.S.

In the wake of the Leaf's launch, Nissan continues to pursue the realization of a zero-emissions society. Already the automaker has experimented with solar-powered charging systems and other advanced technologies to reach that goal, but this new home power supply system could be commercialized as early as this fiscal year.

With this system, the Nissan Leaf can be used as an electricity storage device for houses in preparation for power outages and/or shortages. Following the devastating earthquake that struck Japan in March, the system seems like it would be a smart resource to have in the event of an emergency.
