Nissan Opens R&D Facility In Silicon Valley

The Renault-Nissan Alliance—founded in 1999 as a unique collaboration between two of the world's largest automakers—has opened a new research and development facility that is well-positioned to advance the partnership's ongoing investments in sustainable mobility and other new automotive technologies. That's because the new office is located right in the heart of Silicon Valley, in Mountain View, Calif., right across from Google and mere minutes away from some of the globe's leading technology firms.

The primary focus of Nissan's Silicon Valley research will be on integrating advances in information technology—like graphical user-interface displays, in-vehicle Internet connectivity, smart-grid research and telematics—in future vehicles.

"The Alliance is at the vanguard of the auto industry's shift to sustainable transportation," said Carlos Ghosn, CEO and Chairman of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, as well as both Renault and Nissan separately. "Having a greater footprint in one of the world's headquarters for clean-tech research will extend our lead further."

That's good news for Nissan customers in the U.S., although not so much for the competition. After all, the automaker's current lead is already an extensive one, thanks to the all-electric Nissan Leaf. The first of a new generation of zero-emissions vehicles, the Leaf can deliver an EPA-certified all-electric driving range of 73 miles and mpg-equivalency ratings of 106 mpg city/92 mpg highway/99 mpg combined.

Among the next vehicles launched from the Alliance's .4 billion investment in zero-emissions mobility technology will be a premium electric sedan from Infiniti as well as electric vehicles for Nissan's growing lineup of fleet and commercial products.
