Nissan's North American sales last month were up 12.2 percent, compared to April 2010, to 71,526 units. Excluding Infiniti, the Nissan division saw sales increase 14.5 percent to 64,765 units.

Overall in 2011, Nissan sales are up 23.4 percent. The automaker's April sales were fueled by the Rogue, which garnered sales of 8,432 units, up 28.1 percent over the prior year. The Sentra saw a 42.2 percent increase in sales to 9,367. Even the high-performance GT-R saw a sales increase in April of 143.4 percent to 258 units.

"Nissan took advantage of consumer shifts due to rising fuel prices, resulting in strong increases for fuel-efficient models like Sentra, Altima and Rogue," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. "The addition of innovative, all-new vehicles like Nissan LEAF, Juke, Quest and NV are strengthening our lineup and bringing new buyers to Nissan showrooms."
