Production of the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle was temporarily halted in the wake of the recent earthquake in Japan. However, production resumed again at Nissan's Oppama plant late last week, but executives say that it will be some time before production reaches pre-quake levels.
As production gradually ramps up in Japan, a shipment of 1,500 Leafs just arrived in the U.S. This includes a shipment of 600 Leafs that left Japan the day before the earthquake and tsunami devastated the northeastern part of Japan.
Nissan has already informed customers waiting to take delivery of their new EV to expect to wait a little longer. Delays are due to recent plant shutdowns, electrical power rationing and continuing parts shortages.
The Nissan Leaf is currently on sale in the Japan and Europe, in addition to the U.S. Total deliveries have not topped the 5,000 unit mark.
