Nissan’s New Quest To Shake Up The Minivan Segment

How's this for a new approach to an old problem: "While minivans remain one of the most maligned symbols of adulthood, where some see them as a surrendering of youth and fun, Nissan sees the minivan as a celebration of family life—not only for moms on weekdays, but for fun times with the entire family on weekends. We view Quest as a reward to parents for doing just that—parenting."

That's the word from Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager of the Nissan division in North America, who was on hand at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show to introduce the all-new, completely redesigned 2011 Nissan Quest.

The new Quest, slated to go on sale early next year, is packed with family-friendly technology and features, including:

• Power-sliding doors than can be easily unlocked and opened with a single touch—and without having to fumble with a key fob. As just one bonus of Nissan's I-key system, it takes just a simple press of a button on the Quest's door handle.
• Second-row power windows and dual glass moonroofs, both of which open, allowing all occupants to enjoy a dose of fresh air.
• Standard quick-release, fold-flat seating in the second and third rows, along with optional power-return functionality on the Quest LE.
• Innovative storage solutions including a removable second-row console and an "always-available," covered rear storage well.
• An advanced climate control system with a Plasmacluster air purifier, grape polyphenol filter and auto-recirculation capabilities, which combine to reduce allergens and unwanted odors in the Quest's cabin.
• A fold-down "conversation mirror" that makes it easier for the driver to see and interact with second- and third-row passengers while still facing the road.
• A comprehensive entertainment system with an available 11-inch color monitor for rear passengers.
• An MSRP that starts at ,750.

For added peace of mind, the Quest also benefits from the automaker's "Safety Shield" technologies. The Quest LE, for example, is the first Nissan to come standard with a blind-spot warning system, while all Quests come with the company's Vehicle Dynamic Control and Traction Control System, as well as the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System, which boasts dual-stage supplemental front air bags, roof-mounted curtain-style supplemental side-impact air bags for front and rear passengers, front-seat active head restraints and more.

Plus, it's all wrapped up in dramatic new sheet metal that provides a fresh approach to minivan design. With a bold front fascia, full-surround privacy glass, chrome trim, a rear roof spoiler, and a low, wide stance, the aerodynamic Quest looks as if it were sculpted from a single piece of sculptor's stone.

Which no doubt means a rocky road ahead for the competition!
