Nissan has officially become the second largest Japanese automaker behind Toyota. In 2010, Nissan's global sales increased 21 percent, helping the automaker to overtake Honda for the number two spot.

During 2010, Nissan moved more than 4 million units. Honda also saw an increase in sales, but only managed to move 3.56 million units globally. Meanwhile, Toyota remained the largest automaker in the world, selling 8.42 million cars, trucks, and crossovers.

"In 2010, the Renault-Nissan Alliance achieved unprecedented global sales and global market share. Our performance has been particularly encouraging in growth markets where Alliance brands have continued to gain market share,” said Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

Nissan plans to increase sales volume this year with a bevy of new models. This includes the first mass-marketed all-electric vehicle, the Leaf. While this model will be a relatively low-volume offering, it will serve as a halo car that Nissan will use to bolster its brand in the U.S.
